In May 2011 Mauthen was accepted into the select group of Mountaineering Villages of Austria due to its special geographical conditions and broad recreation offer. This means that the Österreichische Alpenverein honors Mauthen as one of those villages in which the tradition and unspoiled landscapes are essential parts of the identity of the mountaineering village.
Large castles and mass tourism are not to be found here. Instead, our guests await a well-developed network of hiking trails, charming accommodations, experienced mountain guides and unspoiled nature. As a mountaineering village, Mauthen offers mountaineers, hikers and nature lovers everything their hearts desire.
Over 100 km of marked hiking routes lead through a scenic and diverse mountain landscape. Regardless of whether you are a stroller, hiker or a passionate mountaineer - there is something for everyone among the numerous signposted hiking trails.
Kötschach-Mauthen is also a paradise for climbers.
Our mountains are known under the collective term "southern Kalkalpen". In addition to the climbing walls and climbing gardens, there is the only underground via ferrata in Austria, the Cellon tunnel. In the trial climbing garden, experienced mountain guides teach mini-alpinists (from four years) to climb.
